There can be the best of opening paragraphs and the worst of opening paragraphs, but what makes them stand out and remain memorable? Learn how to craft the opening paragraphs of your short story or novel into a work of art, befitting the respect of writers (and readers) everywhere. The focus of this course is to analyze the process of reading first paragraphs in order to better write captivating opening lines. Think of your opening paragraph as a gestalt short story, involving synecdoche and nuance, that encapsulates the essence of the work as a whole.
Examples will be given in class to illustrate what techniques have been employed by famous writers to capture their readers’ attention on the first page. The intention is to both improve upon the students’ writing and level of literary appreciation.
